Abstract: This book is for planners, officials, and citizens seeking to employ the principles of New Urbanism to development in their community. It examines the various ways to do so by modifying land development regulations. Heavily illustrated and in full color, this report describes New Urbanist essentials, the steps to putting New Urbanism to work in a community, and the successes of 12 communities that have followed the approaches described in the report.
In Chapter 1, the authors outline the foundations of New Urbanist zoning, such as decreasing emphasis on uses and use-separation, putting more emphasis on building form and the planning of larger areas. They also list a series of code changes that can be implemented relatively quickly and that will realize New Urbanist objectives. Chapter 2 outlines the steps toward more comprehensive regulatory reform and provides a series of code-drafting principles. Chapter 3 describes the links between New Urbanist principles and regulations with detailed descriptions of ordinances and provisions that relate to the objectives of the Charter of the New Urbanism. Appendix A includes a survey of New Urbanist development regulations already adopted. The Charter of the New Urbanism is provided in Appendix B.
