DRCOG recently completed an EPA-funded Smart Growth and Aging Project, which examined senior-friendly development and will now focus on sharing information with the regional community.
The project found challenges for senior-friendly development with zoning codes and ordinances, and local officials and staff need more education about the unique requirements of active adult communities and older adult housing.
The DRCOG Board endorsed these findings at its April 2007 meeting, and authorized staff to continue working on future activities, which will include:
- Further research into metro area ordinances and zoning codes,
- Formulating an outreach strategy to create livable communities for all ages throughout the region,
- Creating an assessment tool for local governments to use in determining whether their comprehensive plans include healthy-aging elements, and more.
