A Brief History of Metro Vision

A task force of local elected officials, business and environmental group representatives prepared Metro Vision 2020, the region's growth and development plan. In 1997, the DRCOG Board of Directors adopted the plan, which was based on a set of regional development principles and policies.
Leading up to Metro Vision, four alternative development scenarios for the region were assessed and examined. The preferred development scenario, which became the basis for Metro Vision, combined the best features of the four alternatives.
After Metro Vision's adoption, several ad hoc committees prepared programs and documents to help with implementation. In 1998, the Board adopted "Flexibility Provisions" that set the standards for administering the urban growth boundary/area, the region's urban area. In 1999, the Board adopted the Regional Open Space Plan to provide policy direction for open space preservation.
In January 2005, the Board of Directors updated Metro Vision and extended it to the year 2030. In December of 2007, the Board updated the plan again and extended it to the year 2035. Read more about the Metro Vision 2035 update process.
