 Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

ITS

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are the technology tools and systems that local agencies and jurisdictions use to manage transportation operations. The purpose of the DRCOG ITS and Operations Program is to facilitate the implementation of a regional vision for transportation operations using both technology and regional partnerships. These efforts are defined in the three documents below.

The Denver Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems Strategic Plan, an element of the 2035 Metro Vision Regional Transportation Plan, identifies technology concepts that can improve traffic flow and transit trips, and provides the basis for funding decisions regarding their deployment. The current document was adopted by the Board on Dec. 5, 2007.

The ITS Architecture for the Denver Regional Area builds from the ITS Strategic Plan and defines the technical and institutional relationships among transportation related agencies required to move towards integrating transportation systems for a coordinated ITS deployment within the Denver region.

The Regional Transportation Operations Strategy defines a structure to advance day-to-day transportation operations with a regional perspective. Regional transportation operators are collaborating to define regional operational goals as well as their roles and responsibilities within the regional transportation system. The development of an action plan, based on this strategy, will follow.

Regional Intelligent Transportation System Pool

This funding pool was established by DRCOG in the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) to be funded through the federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) program. This pool funds ITS projects that implement the adopted Denver Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems Strategic Plan.

DRCOG staff administers the selection of projects to be funded (see FY10-FY11 project list).
