The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) is responsible
under state and federal statutes for wastewater treatment planning in the Denver area. DRCOG's role is to plan and coordinate with state and local jurisdictions and special districts through a continuing area-wide waste treatment planning process.
DRCOG does this through preparing and maintaining an area-wide, or regional, waste treatment management plan known as the
Clean Water Plan. This plan identifies the treatment works necessary to meet the anticipated municipal and industrial waste treatment needs of the area over a twenty-year period.
Regional issues addressed in the waste-treatment managment plan include identifying watersheds and water quality trends, standards and classifications, wastewater treatment and disposal practices, groundwater quality, land use patterns, wetland protection, non-point source pollution, storm water runoff, water supply and other environmental constraints.
