The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), a nonprofit association of local governments, is dedicated to making the nine-county Denver region a great place to live, work and play.
History
Throughout its 55-plus years, DRCOG has worked to promote a regional perspective toward the most pressing issues facing the metropolitan area and to address those issues through cooperative local government action.
DRCOG traces its roots to Feb. 15, 1955, when 39 Denver area elected officials and staff members met at the Denver Athletic Club. Denver's mayor at the time, Quigg Newton, invited them to the meeting "to consider a four-county district authority to plan for the development of the metropolitan area...and to meet the common problems that confront the four counties."
The next month, the Inter-County Regional Planning Association, DRCOG's predecessor, was created. Adams, Arapahoe and Jefferson counties, and the City and County of Denver were charter members.
The organization changed its name to the Denver Regional Council of Governments in 1968.
The organization is funded by membership dues and federal and state grants.
