The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), on behalf of the member districts/departments, manages the Firefighter Intraregional Recruitment and Employment (FIRE) program. Candidates take one written exam (basic knowledge skills) that is offered twice a year and the results establish an eligibility pool for our 12 member departments. Applications are reviewed during the year as openings occur.

Please read and follow the three steps below to apply.

Step 1: Complete the online application. The testing fee must be paid by the deadline date--no exceptions! If you aren't able to upload certificates or other documents immediately, or complete another section of the application, that's okay--come back any time to update your file. Make sure the information in your file is up-to-date by the time you test. Your application will be valid for one year from the date you tested. It is your responsibility to keep your information current.

Step 2: Fill out the online timed (20 minutes) background questionnaire by the deadline date. Be aware that when you click on the questionnaire, your 20 minutes begins then, and you can't back out and return later; don't enter the questionnaire unless you've allowed yourself time to complete it. The questionnaire contains essay questions on subjects pertaining to your life experience, such as drug usage, criminal events, how you use judgment and decision making in your life, and how you have prepared for the fire service. Spelling and grammar will be considered when the questionnaire is reviewed. Once submitted, the questionnaire becomes part of your file.

Step 3: Pay the $50 testing fee* by the deadline date--no exceptions! Payment of your fee guarantees you a seat for the test; make travel arrangements anytime after paying the fee. Note: If you made arrangements with DRCOG staff to have the test proctored to a group out-of-state, you must choose the option Remote: Testing Fee: $100.00--For taking the test OUT OF THE STATE ONLY!

*Online payment preferred; if paying by check, please mail your payment in (made payable to DRCOG) to 1290 Broadway, Suite 700, Denver 80203 by the deadline date--there are no exceptions!
