Honoring family caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month

Denver, CO — November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and honor the millions of Americans who provide essential care to loved ones facing health challenges. Whether supporting aging parents, children with special needs, or family members with chronic conditions, caregivers play a vital — often unseen — role in strengthening families and communities.

Recent data highlights the national impact of caregiving:

  • About 63 million Americans — almost one in four adults — served as family caregivers in the past year.
  • 59 million of caregivers support someone over the age of 18.
  • About 30% belong to the “sandwich generation,” caring for both children and aging adults.
  • The number of caregivers assisting older adults rose 32% from 18.2 million in 2011 to 24.1 million in 2022.
  • One in five caregivers report their own health has suffered due to caregiving responsibilities, and nearly half of caregivers face financial strain.

In response to these growing needs, the Area Agency on Aging at the Denver Regional Council of Governments offers a Caregiver Support Program designed to provide relief and resources to caregivers.

The program includes:

  • Respite vouchers for up to 32 hours of in-home services, allowing caregivers time to rest and recharge.
  • Information and assistance to connect caregivers with local resources and support networks.

“I encourage everyone to take a moment this month to show appreciation for the caregivers in our lives,” said Esra Sonmez, program manager for Quality and Operations at the Area Agency on Aging. “Their dedication, compassion and strength make a real difference every single day.”
