Winter Bike to Work Day draws 5,000-plus cyclists, reaffirms need for continued investment in bike infrastructure
Cyclists can measure their impact year-round by tracking rides through the My Way to Go platform
More than 5,000 cyclists participated in Winter Bike to Work Day on Friday, February 13, visiting 106 rider appreciation stations throughout the Denver region.
“It’s great to see so many Coloradans come out and celebrate that bike commuting is a viable option year-round,” said Nisha Mokshagundam, Way to Go program manager. “More than 5,000 people participating sends a strong message to our policymakers and leaders in Denver, and throughout the region, that biking is a priority for commuters. Continued investment in safe and comfortable bike infrastructure is critical.”
This year’s Winter Bike to Work Day highlights included:
- Nearly 3,000 cyclists registered online.
- 106 stations throughout Colorado (Front Range and Western Slope).
This year’s participation coincides with a drastic 153% increase in bike commuting amid one of Denver’s warmest winters in years, according to data from My Way to Go. Cyclists are encouraged to use the platform year-round to track biking and other alternative commute trips to see how much money they save on gas and vehicle expenses and measure the carbon they reduce by not driving alone. Commuters can also compete with other people in their area through monthly challenges and win rewards.
Preparations are underway for Bike to Work Day, which will take place on Wednesday, June 24. Bike to Work Day is an internationally celebrated event, and Way to Go serves as the organizer for the Denver region.
